UFC on ESPN 4: Rafael Dos Anjos vs. Leon Edwards Fight Preview
UFC Fight Night San Antonio has an interesting welterweight bout as the main event. Leon Edwards is desperate to step up for a shot at the belt, while Rafael dos Anjos wants to prove that he’s more than just a gatekeeper for the welterweight division.
This UFC on ESPN 4 event takes place on Saturday July 20. Will Edwards be able to make it past the final hurdle, or will RDA slap down another pretender to the throne? Nitrogen Sports Blog breaks down the Dos Anjos vs. Edwards fight below.
Rafael dos Anjos vs Leon Edwards welterweight fight breakdown
When: July 20, 2019
Where: AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas
Line: Rafael dos Anjos (+108) vs. Leon Edwards (-121)
Leon Edwards (17-3) has been on a hot streak since losing to Kamaru Usman in 2015. He continues to grind out wins against decent competition including Donald Cerrone and Gunnar Nelson. Edwards has won all of his past seven fights, during which he’s won via unanimous decision four times and by way of knockout once.
Edwards infamously made headlines after getting into a backstage fight with Jorge Masvidal at UFC London. He wants to avenge his loss against current champ Usman, and thinks a win against Dos Anjos in his fight at the upcoming UFC on ESPN 4 event will set him up for the opportunity.
Dos Anjos, a former champ, (29-11) could still muster a final attempt at the belt with a couple of wins. He won’t fancy Usman in a hurry after a lopsided decision loss last year, but a lot can happen between now and a potential title fight in the future, especially in the welterweight division.
RDA still has some gas left in the tan, despite question marks being raised following a two-fight skid. He easily outlasted Kevin Lee to win by a triangle choke in the fourth round in his last bout.
The fight against Edwards is a quick turnaround against a tough prospect, but both fighters will need to be wary.
RDA has a great clinch, and probably has the edge as a striker. Edwards is known for his adaptability, and he could be too imposing for an older fighter who’s more suited fighting as a lightweight.
A lot depends on who controls the pace of this meeting at UFC on ESPN 4. RDA is an incredible pressure fighter, but Edwards is known for dictating the tempo with his measured approach.
It’s always dangerous to pick a winner in MMA. Edwards would do well to focus on the opponent in front of him, or he could see his impressive streak snapped on the final step of the road to redemption.
Other fights in the main card of UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs. Edwards include a heavyweight bout between Aleksei Oleinik and Walt Harris. Also seeing action in San Antonio are veterans Andrei Arlovksi and Ben Rothwell in an intriguing matchup that kicks off the main event of this combat sports spectacle down in San Antonio.
