Triracial and Trilingual Roots

Leylah Fernandez was born in Montreal, Canada, and currently resides in Boynton Beach, Florida. Her mother is of Filipino-Canadian descent and her father is Ecuadorian. Fernandez is well-versed in three languages; English, Spanish, and French.

Physical and Intellectual Wonder

During her spare time, Fernandez enjoys salsa dancing along with her younger sister Bianca, who’s also training to become a professional tennis player. And when she isn’t displaying her dazzling footwork on the dancefloor, Fernandez loves to solve fun puzzles such as a Rubik’s Cube.

Built Tough

Part of why Fernandez is having the best run in her young professional tennis career yet is because of her unwavering spirit to succeed. The 19-year-old has been playing tennis since she was six and started taking the sport seriously by the age of 10. Her father, Jorge, is part of her coaching staff and has admitted to training her with a somewhat militaristic approach, and the results of such a strict regimen have certainly been impressive as seen in her current Cinderella run at Flushing Meadows.
