Top 5 Favorites To Win The 2019 MLS Season
The 2019-20 MLS tables are already beginning to take shape, with the top seven teams qualifying for the MLS Cup playoffs.
Which team is most likely to win the league, as well as the coveted trophy? Here’s a rundown of the top 2019 MLS favorites by Nitrogen Sports Blog.
5 favorites in 2019 MLS
Los Angeles FC
Los Angeles FC are currently sitting at the top of the Western Conference, having lost just one game in 14 games so far on the season.
They’re undeniably one of the best teams in the league at this moment, and their high-tempo play is being rewarded with positive results.
LAFC captain Carlos Vela is currently leading the charts for goals (13) and is tied for most assists (7). He’s been so good that defenders have recently resorted to rough tactics in a desperate attempt to keep him quiet.
If he’s properly protected by referees, there aren’t many that can stop him over 90 minutes.
Atlanta United were dominant during 2018, in only their second season of MLS football.
Josef Martínez has further established himself as one of the best strikers in the league with a tally of 35 goals in 39 games.
Key playmaker Miguel Almirón left for Newcastle in the offseason, while they also lost head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino to the Mexican national team.
They’re still looking strong midway through 2019, with enough games in hand to top the table if results continue to go their way.
D.C. United are battling at the top of the Eastern Conference, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Wayne Rooney.
The former England striker has scored seven goals in 13 games to go with three assists. Needless to say, Rooney is a big reason why the team is among the 2019 MLS favorites this season.
They lost their last game to Houston Dynamo after being 1-0 up, and a 4-0 loss to LAFC in March will remind them of their limits against the very best.
Philadelphia Union are in great form, topping the Eastern Conference with a game in hand over D.C United.
The Union are unbeaten in six, and they were unlucky not to win their last game against Seattle Sounders after controlling the match for long periods.
Philadelphia thoroughly dominated the possession battle against Seattle, taking 20 shots o to just six by theSounders, but the Union simply just couldn’t find the back of the net. Seattle may have set out a blueprint for holding off the league leaders.
Despite pushing for a way to break the deadlock, The Union were careful to maintain their unbeaten record against a strong defensive unit. Most of their opponents won’t be so lucky.
They’re in the shadow of rivals LAFC for the time being, but LA Galaxy are hoping to improve on a disappointing 2018 campaign.
Forward Zlatan Ibrahimović has been suspended for the next two games after receiving a violent conduct charge. He took down NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson after grabbing him by the throat, getting headlines for the wrong reasons.
They’ll definitely miss his presence. Ibrahimovic has nine goals in 10 games, good for second most in the league behind LAFC’s Vela.
