The Kentucky Derby Sleepers To Look Out For In 2019
The Kentucky Derby is back as the 2019 edition takes place at Churchill Downs on May 4. Bettors will naturally be drawn to the favorites, but there’s always value in betting on the sleepers who could spring huge surprises.
Nitrogen Sports Blog lists down five intriguing Kentucky Derby sleepers to bet on ahead of the “Run for the Roses.”
Maximum Security (+1050)
Maximum Security is fresh off a first place finish at the Florida Derby last month where he led from start to finish.
He is also currently four-for-four under owners Gary and Mary West and considering all this, the undefeated bay colt represents a very solid underdog potential.
“He wasn’t beating anything, he really wasn’t, but he was 3 for 3 at the track and I had Luis Saez,” trainer Jason Servis said of Maximum Security’s Florida Derby debut. “I was like, ‘Hello, what’s the downside?’”
Having finished first at the Tampa Bay Derby and most recently, the Wood Memorial earlier this month, Tacitus is No. 1 at Kentucky Derby points standings. Boasting a 12.5 point lead over Omaha Beach, he is currently among the sexy Kentucky Derby sleepers picks this 2019.
The gray homebred’s trainer in Bill Mott is also a Hall of Fame selection who will be looking to grab his first-ever win at the Kentucky Derby.
Code of Honor (+1600)
Even though he finished third, first and second in his last three races, Code of Honor is one to keep an eye on. For one, his trainer in Shug McGaughey is an experienced Hall of Famer who won the Kentucky Derby in 2013. McGaughey is also very confident in his horse.
And he should. After all, Code of Honor has shown plenty of promise when he won its maiden race in Saratoga and netting a second-place finish at the Grade 1 stakes Champagne. Code of Honor also took the Fountain of Youth (Grade 1) by storm, beating fellow Kentucky Derby entries Bourbon War and Vekoma.
Cutting Humor (+2400)
In his last preparatory race for the fastest two minutes in sports, Cutting Humor topped the Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby last month, which enhanced his outlook as one of the Kentucky Derby underdogs in 2019.
He notably completed the race with a track record time of 1:46.94 and is trained by an experienced and successful trainer in Todd Pletcher.
Pletcher won the Kentucky Derby in 2010 and 2017 with Super Saver and Always Dreaming respectively. Add in three victories at the Belmont Stakes and his horse in Cutting Humor certainly has a lot of value ahead of this year’s event.
Long Range Toddy (+3600)
Long Range Toddy had a disappointing sixth place finish at the Arkansas Derby earlier this month showing that he can be inconsistent, though in fairness, the track was in poor condition.
However, that bad performance only added to his outlook as part of the group of 2019 Kentucky Derby Sleepers; there aren’t many people or bettors looking at his name and thinking, “this is the horse that will win it at Churchill Downs.”
Long Range Toddy’s start prior to the Arkansas Derby was a success, though, topping the field at the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes last month where he notably chased down Improbable.
He also finished third at the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes and second in the Smarty Jones Stakes.
A huge long shot according to the odds, but Long Range Toddy has placed five of six races in his career so far, so there’s value to be found in this horse.
The first leg of the Triple Crown is the grandest of all horse races in the world, not just because of its popular appeal, but also to its impact on the betting industry.
