Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings Week 16 Game Preview

When: Monday , December 23, 2019, 8:20 PM ET
Where: U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis
2019 NFL Odds: Green Bay Packers (+4) vs. Minnesota Vikings (-4)

What to know about the Green Bay Packers (11-3)

The Packers are on a roll, as they have been undefeated since Week 13’s 31-13 win over the New York Giants. They also victimized the Washington Redskins and the Chicago Bears, though, in a manner that was not as convincing as what most of their fans preferred. But the important thing for the Packers is to win games and continue to keep their heads above water in the NFC North, where the Vikings are breathing down their necks.

The Packers have the tie-breaker advantage over the Vikings for now, thanks to their 21-16 home win over Minnesota back in Week 2. Aaron Rodgers threw for 209 passing yards and two touchdowns in that game, while Aaron Jones collected 116 rushing yards and a score on 23 carries. Green Bay’s defense did a solid job of containing Kirk Cousins in that game also, as the Packers picked him off twice and held the Vikings QB down to only 14/32 passing.

What to know about the Minnesota Vikings (10-4)

The Vikings’ defense has stepped up over the last two games. After getting blasted in a 37-30 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13, the Vikings have won two games and outscored their opponents, 59-17. Sure, those are wins against just the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Chargers, but the improvement is very much welcome for the Vikings, who are sixth in scoring defense with opponents putting up 16.5 points per game.

The Vikings are optimistic that running back Dalvin Cook will be able to hit the field on Monday. Cook left the Chargers game in Week 15 with a shoulder injury and did not return, but head coach Mike Zimmer expressed his belief that the former Florida State Seminole tailback will be able to suit up and play in Week 16. Cook tallied 154 rushing yards and a touchdown in the first matchup against the Packers this year.

Fantasy Football spin

  • The Vikings have made some fixes on their secondary, which resulted in success for the team. With that, they are hoping to bottle up Davante Adams, who definitely has a target on his back heading into Week 16. Rodgers may try to loosen up the focus on Adams by getting more balls to his other receivers like Geronimo Allison, who had 19 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches in the win over Minnesota.
  • Cook is not yet out of the woods completely. Even if it sounds like he’s going to play, if his owners have some droppable asset on the bench, it could be a wise move to pick up Mike Boone, who scored two touchdowns and rushed for 56 yards against the Chargers.

Betting trends

  • The Packers are 5-4-1 ATS in their last 10 road games.
  • The Vikings are 3-0 ATS in their last three home games against Green Bay.
