New England Patriots Season and Playoffs Recap
Super Bowl LIII is this Sunday and the New England Patriots are going against the Los Angeles Rams. So for those that need a refresher, Nitrogen Sports Blog looks back at the Pats’ 2018-2019 season – a quick overview of what they went through to reach this point.
After week 3, the New England Patriots were 1-2 and had just suffered their first back to back double digit losses since 2002. It wasn’t looking like a super start, especially since the offseason had been filled with rare in house drama and the losses were to the Jaguars and Lions.
The team got a much need boost in week 5 when one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets, Julian Edelman, returned from suspension and began to look more like the dangerous Patriots of old and finishing 11-5.
The Patriots lead the AFC East
While onlookers keep expecting the team’s 41-year-old QB to falter, Brady and the Pats continue to set records.
During the 2018 season, Brady passed Peyton Manning to become the league’s all-time passing TD leader (including playoffs), and the Patriots also secured their 16th-straight 10-win season, a feat that matched the San Francisco 49ers record run from 1983-1998.
And perhaps most impressive of all, the Patriots became the second team in American Sports history to win 10 straight division titles. For a season that started with some second guessing, the Patriots have roared back to the point where they are daring the public to bet against them.
The Pats gutted it through the regular season, but have clearly been clicking on all cylinders since they faced the Chargers in the Divisional round.
It was a statement game for the Patriots as they outclassed the Chargers, dominating on the ground and through the air.
They then slugged it out with the Chiefs in one of the most exciting Conference Championship games of all time on their way to becoming the third team ever to reach 3 straight Super Bowls.
Tom Brady and Sony Michel needs to be effective this Sunday
The key for the Patriots heading into their Super Bowl matchup with the LA Rams is to continue to move the ball on the ground with Sony Michel while Brady conducts his magic with precision short passes to his array of running backs, slot receivers and of course Rob Gronkowski.
Although Gronk has had a down year, he’s been more active of late, and the Rams struggle against tight ends.
When they play in Super Bowl LIII, the Brady-Belichick combo will have reached the big game for the 10th time. After coming off an excruciating loss to the Eagles in last year’s Super Bowl, Brady and the Patriots will be as hungry as ever for another win.
