What to know about the Alabama Crimson Tide (10-1)

Alabama took care of business in Week 13, as it should against a lowly opponent. The Crimson Tide walloped the Western Carolina Catamounts last Saturday and came away with a 66-3 victory. The Catamounts were hardly expected to make Alabama sweat, serving only as a mere sparring partner for the defending SEC champions in preparation for the Iron Bowl.

Mac Jones had a decent performance as starter for the Crimson Tide. Tua Tagovailoa’s replacement passed for 275 yards (10/12) and three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Keilan Robinson rished for 92 yards and a touchdown, while Najee Harris had 66 rushing yards and a score. Despite losing Tagovailoa, the Crimson Tide are still stacked to the gills with elite talent on both ends of the field.

Losing Tagovailoa is huge for Alabama but not necessarily a crippling gut shot, as someone like Jones can still look Heisman Trophy-worthy when surrounded by the likes of Harris and wide receivers DeVonta Smith and Jerry Jeudy.

What to know about the Auburn Tigers (8-3)

The Tigers also scheduled a punching-bag quality opponent a week prior to the Iron Bowl and they used the opportunity to boost their confidence, destroying the Samford Bulldogs 52-0 last week at home. Auburn torched the Bulldogs’ defense for 544 total yards while allowing just 114 to Samford.

Bo Nix completed 15 of 23 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown, while Shaun Shivers and JaTarvious Whitlow ran for 49 yards and two touchdowns on seven rushing attempts. Head coach Gus Malzahn expressed his confidence in his Tigers team with regards to their chances of beating Alabama, saying that playing Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide at home is “as good as it gets.” That optimism is largely drawn from the fact that Auburn has won two of the teams’ last three meetings at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The last of which was in 2017, when Auburn took down Alabama, 26-14. That Alabama will be coming to town without Tua Tagovailoa can also be considered as a big plus for the Tigers, who are averaging 30.8 points per game.
