AFC East Preview and Predictions for the 2019 Season

July 30, 2019 | Football Sports AFC East Preview

The AFC East has been won by only one team over the last 10 years. That’s Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, who have not given up their title as defending AFC East champs since 2009.

Their dominance of that division goes way back, though, as they have topped the AFC East a total of 16 times since 2001. While the narrative in the AFC East has been overwhelmingly monotonous and in the Pats’ favor, New England can’t be on the top forever.

Will this be the year that the Patriots’ decline starts? Or will Foxborough remains as the home of the AFC East kings? Go ahead and read this AFC East predictions for the 2019 season by Nitrogen Sports Blog.

Older Tom Brady, same story: Patriots, top favorite for AFC East 2019 title

    New England Patriots (-500)

It’s hard to bet against Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. After all, they are the reigning Super Bowl champions and are the betting favorites at +700 to add another championship to their collection this season.

That’s after losing a future Hall of Famer in Rob Gronkowski to retirement and wide receiver Cordarelle Patterson to the Chicago Bears.

So far, they have won a record 21 AFC East titles, and that includes winning the last 10 in a row. Given their -500 odds this year, it’s not such a bad idea to bet on them. Most AFC East predictions this 2019 will tell you that the Patriots are the team to beat.

So long as Brady is healthy and Bill Belichick is the team’s head coach, New England will be a force to reckon with in the NFL, not just in the AFC East.

Will the arrival of Le’Veon Bell and Adam Gase turn the Jets from perennial losers to legitimate contenders?

    New York Jets (+600)

Despite finishing bottom last season with a 4-12 record, the Jets are expected to do much better this season. That’s because in addition to new staff personnel, including a new head coach in Adam Gase, running back Le’Veon Bell will be in action after missing out the whole of last season.

With wide receiver Jamison Crowder also joining the ranks as a free agent, the Jets are currently +600 to win the AFC East. Could they go all the way and win a Super Bowl, however? Their odds of +8000 make that seem unlikely.

In any case, the Jets seem to have the tools as sleepers to spoil most AFC East predictions this 2019 — that the Patriots will come out on top as usual — and win the division.

    Buffalo Bills (+900)

The Bills finished last season in the AFC East third with a 6-10 record. They are likely to finish in the same position this season as their AFC East odds of +900 show. That said, there should be marked improvement offensively for Sean McDermott’s squad.

After all, the Bills can’t go much worse than what they did in 2018 when they ranked 30th in scoring offense and 31st in interceptions.

But with multiple new offensive linemen signed to complement quarterback Josh Allen, as well as the drafting of offensive tackle Cody Ford, if the offense clicks, who knows? Maybe the Bills could surprise everyone and win a first AFC East title since 1995.

The AFC East could be the most predictable of all divisions in the NFL, largely because of the existence of the Patriots, who have been ruling since all the way back when Josh Allen was just a five-year-old kid.

But as easy as it is to say that the AFC East predictions this 2019 should be very much in favor of the Patriots, that team will have some stiff competition, with Brady getting older and other squads expected to be stronger than their 2018 versions.
