2021 Nitrogen Sports NFL Survivor Pools Recap: Weeks 1 to 9
The first half of the 2021 NFL regular season was never short on huge surprises and untimely upsets. In turn, our latest and biggest Nitrogen Sports NFL Survivor Pool contests to date had drastic swings that even our most tenured survivors from previous seasons could not have predicted.
That being said, here are our key takeaways from the first half of the 2021 NFL season and how the landscape of our Nitrogen Sports NFL Survivor Pools has been affected. And to be on top of all the developments from the NFL offseason and beyond, head on over to Nitrogen Sports Blog after this.
First off, we’d like to thank each and every one of our 2021 NFL Nitrogen Sports Survivor Pool participants. With over 5,600 entries in our public pools and another 3,000 more in our private pools, this season surely attracted a ton of players!
As with the uncertainty that each new football season brings, Week 1 of the 2021 season whittled down the field quite significantly. Our Free Pool, which had over 2,100 entrants at the start of the season, was reduced to just a little over 1,500 participants left after opening week., which is about a quarter of the entire field gone in an instant.
Things have been mostly been quiet week-on-week across all survivor pools following Week 1. However, it wouldn’t be long before chaos would ensue and throw any given pool into a loop (palindrome for the win as well).
7, 8, 9… It’s Mass Elimination Time!
By Week 7, our Free Nitrogen Pool was down to just 850 survivors; half of the total from Week 1’s initial exodus. However, Weeks 8 and 9 thereafter would deliver crippling blows to many a survivor campaign. From the 850 survivors from our Free Pool in Week 7, that number has been cut down to 471 in Week 8 and to merely 195 left standing after Week 8 and Week 9’s bloodbath of upsets.
Folks over in our top three big-money public leagues have had it the worst. Our MVP, Hall of Fame, and NITROGEN Pools each saw their respective survivor counts from Week 7 lose about 75 percent of its population over the next two weeks. The NITROGEN Pool, which had 19 brave souls fighting it out for the massive 0.6 BTC (~$40,000) total prize payout, was down to 15 players by Week 7 and to just four participants with half of the season still left to be played following the brutal two-week stretch.

Looking Ahead to the Second Half of the Campaign
We have not seen a huge drop-off in remaining contestants at the midway point of the past few seasons, and that’s even considering the wild scheduling conflicts and issues brought upon the first half of last year’s pandemic-riddled NFL campaign. That being said, the few lucky survivors still in the running as we speak must step up their game and avoid major traps and pitfalls to the best of their ability.
However, what we’ve come to know as surefire survivor locks have disappointed many a survivor over the past couple of weeks, namely the Bills, Chiefs, Packers, Cowboys, and Saints. That being said, perhaps the better strategy would be to start picking these preseason playoff contenders early in the second half before things get out of hand.
The likes of Buffalo (-13 favorite at NY Jets) and Dallas (-9 fave hosting Atlanta) seem like sound locks in Week 9 rather than holding off on them towards the tail-end of the survivor campaign for what should’ve been easy wins during the home stretch. AFC teams like the Broncos, Browns, Colts, and Patriots deserve more consideration as they’ve all turned the corner of late and could provide huge upsides in the weeks to come given favorable matchups for each rising contender.
