2021 NFL Week 1: Best Bet Winners

Saints best bets W1

The action from the first Sunday of the 2021 NFL regular season is in the books and the day wasn’t short of huge surprises and upsets on the betting front. That being said, let’s recap several games that rewarded backers of underdogs teams on opening week, setting the tone for what should be an even more compelling round of football in Week 2.

Read on as we break down the three best bet winners from Week 1 of the 2021 NFL regular season below. And to be on top of all the developments from the NFL offseason and beyond, head on over to Nitrogen Sports Blog after this.

Detroit Lions rally to cover (+8.5) spread versus Niners

The San Francisco 49ers had the longest odds to win as favorites in Week 1, but they were still on their way to covering the only two-score spread of the week after jumping out to a 28-point third-quarter lead. However, the Detroit Lions simply would not go down, scoring 16 unanswered points in the final two minutes of the contest.

Although the Lions came up short of pulling off a miraculous comeback, their eight-point defeat was still enough to cover and give their few backers against the spread something to rejoice about against overwhelming odds given how the majority of the game was going the Niners’ way. This, in turn, should have more bettors siding with Detroit during the team’s Week 2 road trip to Lambeau.

New Orleans Saints upset and rout (-3.5) favorite Green Bay

Speaking of Lambeau Field, perhaps the Green Bay Packers will be reenergized in front of their home fans this coming weekend because they simply stunk in their season opener on the road against the New Orleans Saints. We can’t even recall when was the last time that Aaron Rodgers and the Packers were held to just a single field goal all day.

On the flip side, a strong showing by the Saints’ offense should have them as road favorites to win in their Week 2 trip to Carolina to take on the Panthers. New Orleans’ defense, which held Green Bay to merely 43 rushing yards, just 1-of-10 on third-down conversions, and forced three takeaways, should have another strong showing. The same could be said about the Saints’ new starting QB in Jameis Winston, who threw five passing TDs and without a single turnover for a change.

Cleveland Browns cover (+5.5) against Chiefs

A rematch of last season’s divisional playoff game proved to be one of the best games of Week 1 as advertised, as the Kansas City Chiefs eked out a four-point win over the Cleveland Browns.

While the Browns held on to cover the spread despite the Chiefs ultimately winning the game, Baker Mayfield and Co. actually appeared to have the ATS win in the bag after holding a 12-point lead at the half. Cleveland’s run game generated four rushing TDs on the day and should be a force to be reckoned with by the Houston Texans in Week 2, with the Browns expected to be favorites to win on the road for a change. Bettors beware, though, as the Texans staged a 16-point victory in their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
