What to know about the Texas A&M Aggies
The Aggies steamrolled past the Texas State Bobcats last week in a 41-7 victory in College Station. Quarterback Kellen Mond looked very sharp in dissecting the Bobcats’ defense with ease, throwing for 194 yards and three touchdowns on 19 for 27 completions. He also did damage on the ground with a touchdown and 25 rushing yards on five carries.
It’s easy to look good for the Aggies when they were up against a lightweight opponent in the Bobcats. It’s going to be another story in Week 2 with the defending champions staring them face to face at their own turf. But Mond showed he can stand his ground against the Tigers when he passed for 430 yards and three touchdowns on 23 of 40 passing, albeit in a 28-26 home loss to Clemson last season.
What to know about the Clemson Tigers
Even on a night in which Trevor Lawrence was not on top of his game, the Tigers still managed to decimate an overmatched Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at home last week, 52-14, to get not only their first win of the season but also their first victory in the conference.
Lawrence passed for 168 yards and a touchdown, but had two interceptions against the Yellow Jackets. His shaky play could just be charged to rust, but he’ll have to be better against a tougher opponent in Texas A&M. Lawrence had yet to assume the starring role under center for Clemson when the Tigers met the Aggies last year, but he’s expected to deliver along with running back Travis Etienne, who had 44 rushing yards and a touchdown in 2018 against Texas A&M. Clemson’s defense will be a big factor, too, in this Texas A&M vs Clemson meeting.
- Texas A&M is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games.
- Clemson is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 September games.
For the second year in a row, Mond and the Aggies will be taking a shot at Clemson.
