Favorites To Win The 2019 Kentucky Derby
The first leg of the 2019 Triple Crown is less than a week away. That’s the 2019 Kentucky Derby, which will be the latest in a long line of this historically rich American tradition. Held each year on the first Saturday of May since 1946, the Kentucky Derby is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year.
Celebrities, tycoons and the world’s fastest horses will all be converging at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. So grab a mint julep and get ready for the fastest two minutes in sports as Nitrogen Sports Blog examines four of the Kentucky Derby favorites plus their odds to win in the 2019 edition of the Run for the Roses.
Omaha Beach (+430)
Omaha Beach is trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella. The colt is heading into the 2019 Kentucky Derby with some big wins on his resume. Omaha Beach came out as the victor in two recent graded stakes races, making him among the unquestioned Kentucky Derby top picks.
The Derby’s favorite topped the field at the Arkansas Derby and at the Rebel Stakes, giving the colt out of Fox Hill Farms, Inc. an improved outlook for the upcoming race at Churchill Downs. And veteran jockey Mike Smith will be trying to replay his Triple Crown run from 2018 on a new horse. After an impressive start to 2019, Omaha Beach is the horse to beat this year.
UPDATE: Omaha Beach will not be making a landing at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Per Steve Almasy of CNN, Omaha Beach has withdrawn from the 2019 Kentucky Derby due to a respiratory issue that could need surgery to correct.
Game Winner (+750)
Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert will have his fingerprints all over the 2019 Kentucky Derby — like he always does at this racing event. He’s the trainer of three of Kentucky Derby favorites in 2019, including Game Winner. Baffert called Game Winner a fighter and it showed when he lost to Omaha Beach by a nose at the Rebel Stakes.
Former Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Joel Rosario will saddle up Game Winner. In his last race, Game Winner finished second at the Santa Anita Derby (Grade 1 stakes), but outperformed some fellow Kentucky Derby competitors.
Bob Baffert must love fighters. Although hailed a great horse by the famed Baffert from early on, Roadster had to overcome some serious health issues before getting to the point where he is now — as one of the hottest Kentucky Derby top picks. A breathing problem forced Roadster to have a throat surgery last year.
But the horse has been better than ever since correcting the breathing blockage. Roadster turned heads at the Santa Anita Derby, by storming back down the homestretch to edge out one of the Kentucky Derby darlings, Game Winner.
Of all the horses trained by the legendary Bob Baffert this year, Improbable might be the most impressive, though, he can also be classified as one of the 2019 Kentucky Derby underdogs, depending on one’s discretion.
Ridden by French jockey Florent Geroux, Improbable is comfortable when it’s stalking the pace. But this horse can lead the pack right out of the gate as well. He showed that ability off with his wire to wire win at the Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity.
Plus, Baffert loves how Improbable always maintains a smooth stride while also finding another gear down the stretch. One of horse racing’s rising stars, Irad Ortiz Jr. will be riding Improbable. He won the most recent Shoemaker award as the best jockey in America.
The discussions about the Kentucky Derby will only get hotter the closer the big race gets. The Kentucky Derby favorites in 2019, according to their odds to win, are definitely — and understandably — getting the most attention, which is also why folks who want to lay money on the Run for the Races should brush up on their knowledge on how to bet on sports.
