WePlay! Bukovel Minor 2020 Preview

Bukovel Minor 2020

WePlay! Bukovel Minor 2020, The first Dota Pro Circuit tournament of 2020, takes place from January 9-12 and features a number of teams vying to prove themselves and earn a place at the DreamLeague Major, including former Liquid roster Nigma. Nitrogen Sports Blog looks into this minor as several teams in attendance have recently undergone roster changes.

Roster changes before the tournament

Shortly before the Christmas break, Ninjas in Pyjamas (NiP) and Geek Fam made changes. NiP, who had been looking pretty good since they took third place at DreamLeague Season 12, picked up British player TANNER, someone who doesn’t have much experience at the top level of play.

Skiter, NiP’s previous carry, had been lacking in his performances at the qualifiers for this event and DreamLeague Season 13. TANNER, although unproven, has shown great promise in his time in the UK and lower-tier European scene, and could provide rejuvenation for the other members of NiP.

Geek Fam, who came from the Southeast Asian qualifier, replaced the lone American Ryoya and was relieved by Karl, a young mid-laner who had been making a name for himself in the Southeast Asia scene. Similarly to TANNER, he’s unproven at the DPC level, but will hopefully provide some motivation for Geek Fam, who crashed out of Dota Summit in second-to-last place.

Nigma all set to make a mark this season

Everybody will be looking at Nigma during WePlay! Bukovel Minor 2020, a new organization formed by the previous Team Liquid team led by KuroKy. Nigma have put up a strong performance in the various qualifiers they’ve attended recently, winning two.

Despite this, when they’ve come up against strong teams, you see a few cracks in their game plan. They’ve had problems in the draft stage and have seemingly showcased a lack of in-game synergy. They seem to do their best when W33 is making high risk plays, but unfortunately he hasn’t had much of a chance to shine.

Time will tell if Nigma have made the right adjustments to prepare the team for the Bukovel Minor. You can’t count this team out as this is still the team that placed second in The International 2019.

The Bukovel Minor favorites

The teams in this Minor make it a tough pick who are the favorites. This just means the competition is fierce. Some would point to Royal Never Give Up, Geek Fam, NiP or Nigma, but some of these teams have had roster changes in recent months and could look completely different when they perform in January.

Nevertheless, Nigma does have a stacked roster and will be incredibly hungry to attend their first Major under their new organization. RNG could also pose a threat, but are unpredictable at the moment, especially after not playing a tournament for a few weeks.

Despite some clear favorites, roster moves and the timing of this Minor have made it a very unpredictable tournament, and one that could give us an idea of how the DPC season will turn out for the teams in attendance. Winning the Minor secures qualification to the first Major of 2020, DreamLeague Season 13 in Leipzig, where the world’s best teams will be in attendance, posing a challenge to whomever wins in Bukovel.
