The lightweight belt will finally be contested for again as Khabib Nurmagomedov (27-0) and Dustin Poirier (25-5 1NC) collide in a title unification fight in the main event of UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi.
Will Nurmagomedov add another big name at lightweight to his resume or will Poirier continue to shock the world with one of the biggest upsets in UFC history? Nitrogen Sports Blog lays down the UFC 242 betting odds and preview of Khabib Poirier.
UFC 242 betting odds and preview: Khabib vs Poirier
Where: The Arena, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
When: Saturday, September 7, 2019
Betting Odds: Khabib Nurmagomedov (-379) vs Dustin Poirier (+305)
Nurmagomedov is coming off a huge win over Conor McGregor, submitting the Irishman in their massive UFC 229 encounter last year. Of course, it will be 11 months since he last competed in the Octagon, but ring rust shouldn’t be an issue for “The Eagle” who is always training. He will now look for a second successful title defense against Poirier and it’s no surprise that he is the betting favorite.
After all, Nurmagomedov is undefeated, with many still believing he is yet to lose a round in the UFC. Most expect this fight to go the same way all of Nurmagomedov’s fights go — him taking his opponent down and mauling them for five rounds or getting the submission win.
But it would be foolish to count out Poirier who surprised many when he defeated Max Holloway at UFC 236 via unanimous decision. “The Diamond” has come leaps and bounds since his knockout loss to Michael Johnson back in 2016 and is unbeaten over his last six outings. While it remains to be seen if he can stop a Nurmagomedov takedown, Poirier is no slouch on the ground and offers a submission threat.
However, his greatest chance is if he can keep the fight standing in the third or fourth rounds where Nurmagomedov usually tends to slow down. Poirier has a good cardio and some of the best boxing and counterpunching in the sport. If he is able to get his foe in a striking match at that point, it represents the best chance for Poirier to get the victory with a knockout punch.
McGregor aside, Poirier will be the best opponent Nurmagomedov will have faced in recent years and he certainly has a chance. That said, we still see the Dagestani fighter coming out on top via unanimous decision.
