Max Holloway vs Frankie Edgar breakdown
Where: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
When: July 27, 2019
Line: Max Holloway (-402) vs. Frankie Edgar (+336)
Holloway (20-4) is coming off a loss against Dustin Poirier from their interim lightweight title fight back in April. It was the Hawaiian’s first loss since 2013.
While Poirier’s size played a major factor as well as his ability to take Holloway’s punches, that won’t be a problem against Edgar (23-6-1), who somehow used to be the lightweight champion despite being the size of a bantamweight.
The Blessed will have a huge five-inch height advantage as well as a three-inch reach advantage over his opponent in UFC 240: Holloway vs. Edgar fight.
Holloway specializes in distance control and using his range, and that’s going to be a huge key to success for him at UFC 240: Holloway vs. Edgar.

Holloway is known primarily for his skills in wrestling. The reach advantage will come into play in this regard and given how Holloway loves to use volume, it’ll be interesting to see if Edgar, now 37, will be able to absorb his strikes like he used to in the past.
Holloway also has good takedown defense with 83 percent, and if he’s able to stuff the bulk of “The Answer’s” attempts early on, it’s hard to see him not coming away the victory due to his striking skills.
That said, it would be foolish to underestimate Edgar who has upset the odds several times before. Many expected him to lose to the red-hot Yair Rodriguez just two years ago but ended up winning via stoppage. Similar in stature to Holloway, Rodriguez was taken down and beaten to a pulp by Edgar, who eventually won via TKO (doctor stoppage).
At this stage, Holloway is a much better fighter than Rodriguez. However, Edgar, who has won three of his last four, averages 2.47 takedowns landed per 15 minutes and if he is able to take him down, it’ll be very interesting to see how the fight goes, given that Holloway hasn’t been taken to the ground in ages.
But having prepared to face the Hawaiian twice before, Edgar will undoubtedly have worked out other gameplans as well. The New Jersey native is not a one trick pony after all, with some good striking, averaging 3.59 significant strikes landed per minute. Holloway also notably absorbs quite a lot of significant strikes per 15 minutes with 4.03.
Holloway will naturally be the favorite, but a win against a future Hall of Famer in Edgar is not guaranteed by any means.
This UFC 240: Holloway vs. Edgar fight is an intriguing matchup between a grizzled veteran and a fighter that’s at his peak. Edgar is 10 years the senior of Holloway and is the huge underdog, though, you can never count out a warriors like him.
