What to know about Canelo Alvarez

Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant betting odds for Alvarez: -1,000

Ever since dropping his first and only professional bout to legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013, there’s arguably been no better pound-for-pound boxer than Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

With a stunning 56-1 record, the 31-year-old Guadalajara native has proven to be the cream of the super middleweight crop time and again. From late 2015 onwards, Alvarez has done nothing but capture and retain middleweight and super middleweight accolades along his path of destruction. The only blemish across this 12-fight streak was a draw with Gennady Golovkin in 2017.

Alvarez shed all doubts from that draw with a majority-decision win over Golovkin in their rematch. Don’t expect Saturday’s bout to go the distance, though, as 38 or Canelo’s wins have come by way of knockout. He’d even retired his last two opponents in Anvi Yildirim (third round) and Billy Joe Saunders (eighth round) to further extend his dominance over the division.

What to know about Caleb Plant

Canelo Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant betting odds for Plant: +625

Quietly dominating the IBF super middleweight circuit himself is Caleb Plant, who’s won all 21 of his professional fights to date. The 29-year-old out of Tennessee won the IBF super middleweight title in 2019 against Jose Uzcategui and hasn’t looked back since, with three successful title defenses already under his belt as well.

Plant is technically sound and has great endurance to outlast his opponents. Although nine of his 21 wins were decided by the judge’s scorecard, all of them resulted in nothing less than a unanimous-decision victory. Furthermore, “Sweethands” has a two-inch height advantage and a 3 ½ -inch reach advantage against Alvarez.

However, no unbeaten record is ever safe from Canelo. Alvarez remains the only man to have beaten other standouts in the scene such as Callum Smith and the aforementioned Saunders and Golovkin, putting an end to multiple contenders’ dreams of upending the champ’s lengthy reign. In turn, Plant would need to dance around and counter Canelo’s swift, powerful punches with extreme precision to stand a chance at defying the overwhelming odds against him.
