Russell Westbrook, Max Scherzer, 2021 NBA Draft combine for a wild day in sports

LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Lakers, Anthony Davis

Today has been a wild day in sports. On one hand, there’s the 2021 NBA Draft, which is happening as of this moment. Then there’s also the fact that it’s the NBA offseason, so trades can happen any time, as teams look to trade up or trade down in order to fulfill completely different goals in stocking future assets or adding win-now pieces to their rosters. On the other hand, the 2021 MLB Trade deadline is producing one crazy deal after another. Put all those together and you’ll have a Twitter timeline that’s going to pop off nonstop with news about Russell Westbrook, Max Scherzer, and more.

Hollywood Super Team

Indeed, Russell Westbrook is now reportedly on his way to the Los Angeles Lakers. The former NBA MVP. Nothing is set in stone yet as of the moment, but that’s likely going to be the case. Shams Charania of The Athletic has already reported that the Lakers will send the No. 22 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft along with Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope for Westbrook and a couple of future second-round picks.

The Lakers are obviously trying to maximize whatever it is that’s left of LeBron James’ prime and the presence of Anthony Davis. Having Westbrook would certainly have a huge impact on the court for a Lakers team that already has a ball-dominant ball-handler in LeBron.

Does Westbrook’s inevitable arrival in Tinseltown mean that LeBron is now willing to drop his usage rate and become more of an off-ball offensive creator? How would two nightly triple-double threats co-exist? Westbrook will also affect the Lakers’ front office decisions. He is due to earn $44.211 million in the 2021-22 NBA season and has a player option on a $47.063 million salary on the last year of his current deal in 2022-23.

Mad Max: Fury Road To A World Series Win

Baseball isn’t going to let itself be overshadowed that much by the NBA. Jeff Passan of ESPN and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic have both reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers are closing in on a deal that would get them another superstar arm in Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer.

The pitcher is set to hit free agency at the end of the 2021 MLB season, and with the Nationals way out of the postseason race, Scherzer is among the most talked-about players ahead of the trade deadline. In exchange, the Nationals are expected to get Trae Turner, at least. The deal is not done yet, but in all likelihood, Scherzer is going to be wearing a new uniform the next time he toes the rubber. It’s also worth noting that Scherzer’s agent, Scott Boras, had said before that Scherzer would only waive his “10-5” privilege (full no-trade clause) if the landing spot would guarantee an extension contract.

The Dodgers are currently three games back of the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants, so there’s a legitimate motivation for LA, despite its already loaded lineup, to add a big name.

No Stonks For Bronx Bombers

Over in the American League, the New York Yankees flexed their muscles as well and landed Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo in two separate deals. These moves give the Bronx Bombers even more power to their batting order that also has Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. Gallo and Rizzo provide the Yankees two hard-hitting lefties who should immediately boost their offense. New York is currently just 20th in the majors in batting average, ninth in OBP, and just 26th in RBIs.

2021 NBA Draft

Lastly, there’s the 2021 NBA Draft. As expected by many, the Detroit Pistons took Cade Cunningham of the Oklahoma State Cowboys as this year’s first overall pick. There were rumors that the Pistons might trade the pick but keeping it made more sense for them. Cunningham will now be the central figure of a Motown rebuild.
