Carmelo Anthony signing with the Portland Trail Blazers
He’s back. Free agent Carmelo Anthony has finally found his way back to the NBA, as he is inking a deal with the Portland Trail Blazers, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Anthony’s agreement to play for the Blazers comes shortly after the team suffered a 114-106 loss at home to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. The Blazers are off to a bad start to the 2019-20 NBA season, losing four of their first 12 games, and have only won one of their last seven contests.
It remains to be seen what Anthony will be able to bring to Portland after being away from the league for quite some time. Anthony appeared in only 34 games for the Houston Rockets last season, averaging 13.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, while shooting just 40.5 percent from the field. His well-known resistance to accepting a supporting role cued his eventual falling out with the Rockets, and whether he’d be willing to embrace the same function he used to detest is something that’s worth monitoring.
Portland is needing a boost from its relievers. The Blazers are just 27th in the league with only 29.1 points from the bench, and adding Anthony to the second unit could be the shot in the arm it is looking for.
The Blazers are set to embark on a six-game road trip, beginning with a matchup against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.
