3 Best Trade Destinations for Anthony Davis
Anthony Davis’ contract with the New Orleans Pelicans runs until the end of the 2020-21 season, but it looks like the athletic big man will be parting ways with Pels sooner rather than later. In other words, an Anthony Davis trade sounds imminent.
The Pelicans power forward made his intentions clear earlier this year that he wanted to leave. While New Orleans might have stood firm on keeping him, receiving the No. 1 overall draft pick may change things, especially with Zion Williamson in this year’s class.
So should they trade him, what is the best destination for AD and his career? In this piece, Nitrogen Sports Blog takes a look at three teams with the highest chance to land the former Kentucky Wildcats stud.
New York Knicks
The New York Knicks would be an ideal trade destination for Davis. They have the trade assets in Dennis Smith Jr., Frank Ntilikina and more, along with a number of draft picks, including this year’s No. 3 pick.
As for Davis, he would be tasked with bringing a championship back to the biggest market in the world. If there’s ever a place to be a star, it’s in New York after all. The Knicks also have the cap space for another marquee free agent to team up with him such as Jimmy Butler or Kemba Walker.
Gotham needs a basketball hero, and Davis could just be that guy who’ll end the city’s basketball title drought.
An Anthony Davis trade will set the Knicks back for $27 million in the 2019-20 season and $28.7 million more in the 2020-21 campaign, as stipulated in his current contract.
The Celtics have long been rumored to be cooking an Anthony Davis trade. Boston is also reportedly the 26-year-old’s preferred landing spot in case of a trade. The Celtics have the assets to entice New Orleans as well as they could make a package surrounding Jayson Tatum and/or Jaylen Brown.
And if they can re-sign Kyrie Irving to a brand new deal, Davis would not only be surrounded by one of the best players in the league in the 2016 NBA champion, but also by the likes of Gordon Hayward, potentially Al Horford, and more.
Such a team would be the best Davis has ever played with. With the Milwaukee Bucks, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Toronto Raptors all becoming a force in the East, the Celtics will be able to keep in step with the rest of them for years to come if they could extricate Davis away from New Orleans.
Los Angeles Lakers
When it’s all said and done, the Lakers would be the best destination for Davis. The Lakers could offer their No. 4 pick along with the likes of Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Lonzo Ball for Davis.
If a trade worked out, we could then see a real threat to the dominance of the Golden State Warriors with Davis and arguably the best player in the league in LeBron James teaming up.
While New York is the biggest market in the world, it’s another thing entirely to be a Lakers star, and contributing to a first championship since 2010 for the 16-time champions would go a long way into making AD a true basketball legend.
