Five Games to Watch on Major League Baseball’s Opening Day
Following the two games in Tokyo, the regular MLB season is set to start Thursday. Thirty teams will face each other in 15 games as the 2019 season officially begins on American soil.
As always, a high volume of MLB opening day games can make it difficult to decide which ones to watch. Powerhouse teams are always a safe bet, but it can’t be denied that other games also have tantalizing entertainment value.
With all that said, Nitrogen Sports Blog highlights the five top games to watch.
Washington Nationals vs.New York Mets
The Nationals-Mets game is one of the closest matchups in terms of last year’s standings. The Nationals finished with a better record last season with a .506 win percentage (82-80).
The Mets were not too far behind at .475 (77-85). This meeting will feature arguably the best pitching matchup on opening day, as two former Cy Young award winners in Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom are set for an intense duel on the mound.
St Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers performed well last season – narrowly missing a World Series spot. There’s a raised level of optimism for the Cardinals this season, with the team adding Paul Goldschmidt and Andrew Miller to the roster.
Meanwhile, the Brewers will look to build on an NLCS appearance in 2018. Christian Yelich and a bullpen that ranked among the best last season will look to help the Brewers kick off their MLB season on a high note.
It’s one of those opening games you don’t want to miss to start the 2019 season.
Houston Astros vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays finished third in the AL East with a 90-72 record in 2018. It was admirable in some ways, considering the injuries they had to deal with and a front office that was not as interested in winning a World Series as in rebuilding a relatively weak roster.
The Astros will be a formidable matchup for Tampa Bay on Thursday, but at least the Rays have Blake Snell on the mound, who went 21-5 in 2018 and finished with a low 1.89 ERA and won the 2018 AL Cy Young award. A solid athlete and is considered one of the best pitchers to bet on this season. Houston, meanwhile, will send Justin Verlander, a former Cy Young winner, to the mound.
Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics
For the start of the 2019 MLB season, we have the Angels taking on the Athletics as one of MLB’s opening games. The Angels are defined by one player in the form of superstar Mike Trout.
Trout, who recently signed a 12-year deal with Los Angeles, is unquestionably the best player of the Halos. It’s also worth noting that LA’s scheduled opening day starter is Trevor Cahill, who started 21 games last year for the Athletics. He went 5-1 with a 1.84 ERA in 11 starts last year at Oakland Coliseum.
Cleveland Indians vs. Minnesota Twins
The Indians will look to begin their 2019 campaign with their best pitcher on the mound in the form of Corey Kluber. He will make his fifth-straight opening day duty as a starter following a stellar 2018 season in which he went 20-7 with a 2.89 ERA in 33 starts.
The Twins, on the other hand, will have Jose Berrios, who is 3-2 with a 4.82 ERA in seven career starts against the Tribe.
