2020 MLB Futures AL West: Favorites

Houston Astros (-192)

Expect Houston to get some comeuppance from their opposition considering the team’s current status as the resident villain of the MLB.
Although the Astros will have to psychologically deal with the aftermath of their cheating scandal, there’s no denying how many All-Star level weapons are returning to try and win another World Series title the right way this time around.

On pitching, the dynamic duo of Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke is still enough to hold the starting rotation fort, even with fellow ace Gerrit Cole now with the Yankees. The terrifying trio of Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Alex Bregman is still intact as well.

If the Astros can cancel out all the negative noise that will rain upon them the entire campaign and avoid any more negative publicity, the reigning AL West champs could very well extend their dominance over the division and start the new decade with a well-earned redemption arc.

Oakland Athletics (+275)

Billy Beane baseball still lives on in Oakland, as the Athletics remain one of the more competitive teams despite their relatively small budget playing in a small-market city.

Standout third baseman Matt Chapman has been a solid lynchpin for the A’s offense, and slugger Khris Davis should bounce back nicely after an uncharacteristically underwhelming performance last season for his standards. The starting rotation needs an ace to put the team over the top, but the Athletics have already proved time and again that they can get by with a balanced pitching staff rather than counting on one or two big arms.

Given how tenuous the Astros’ chances are to repeat their glowing success of late, the A’s could just as easily snatch the division pennant from them this year.

2020 MLB Futures AL West: Dark Horses

Los Angeles Angels (+650)

Like the Dodgers, the Angels share the same location and big-market feel as their National League counterparts. However, despite having arguably the best player in the majors in Mike Trout, glaring holes in Los Angeles’ roster have resulted in underwhelming results for the past few seasons.

Team management addressed some of these concerns in the offseason by adding Anthony Rendon into the lineup for more firepower on offense. The pitching staff is still quite an issue, though, and it appears that the Halos are putting a lot of eggs into the Shohei Ohtani basket to do a lot of work and right after the Japanese sensation just recovered from Tommy John surgery.

The Angels have always perplexed fans and pundits alike as for how a talent-rich franchise can’t seem to put together a well-rounded team. Perhaps with the pieces in place this year, Tinseltown’s forgotten son will finally steal the Dodgers’ thunder for a change.

Texas Rangers (+1,600)

The other AL East team from the Lone Star State appears in line for a solid playoff push, especially if the Rangers’ signing of Corey Kluber in the offseason doesn’t come back to haunt them. Kluber was hampered by injuries for the majority of the previous season but is considered as one of the league’s best aces when healthy.

A rotation consisting of Kluber, Mike Minor, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn makes for a fearsome foursome that will put the division to the test. Todd Frazier moved from New York to Arlington to provide some veteran batting prowess in the order to round out new-look Texas aiming for another good crack at a World Series title in almost a decade.

2020 MLB Futures AL West: Huge Reach

Seattle Mariners (+6,600)

2020 doesn’t appear to be the year when Seattle will finally break their notoriously lengthy postseason drought. The team is still in full rebuild mode and their division rivals have way more individual talent as we speak.

Still, M’s fans can look forward to another season wherein huge improvements from their star players should provide much optimism about the next full-fledged season. Kyle Seager is already 32 years old but still has a lot of juice left, while burly slugger Daniel Vogelbach will certainly be fun to watch following his breakout 2019 campaign.

What’s your 2020 MLB Season AL West prediction?

We’ll give the Astros the benefit of the doubt of repeating as AL West champs in terms of their sheer talent on the roster. However, we also wouldn’t be opposed to the idea that either the A’s, Angels, or Rangers each make a good push towards toppling the common archenemy.
