Chicago Cubs vs Los Angeles Dodgers Series Preview
The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers are the top dogs in their respective divisions. The Cubs, who just agreed to a deal with closer Craig Kimbrel, are in a neck-and-neck race to the top of the National League Central, while the Dodgers are heads and shoulders above the rest of the teams in the NL West.
Packed with offensive talent and quality pitching, the Cubs and the Dodgers could be on a path towards another meeting in the National League Championship Series since 2017.
They are packed with dynamic talent. From defense and speed, to simply hitting the ball over the fence, the Cubs and Dodgers have it all covered. With studs like Cody Bellinger and Javier Baez on display, we are bound to see sparks fly.
The series will be played not too far from Hollywood and certainly won’t lack in star power. In this Cubs vs Dodgers series preview, Nitrogen Sports Blog goes through the pitching matchups set for this week.
Cubs vs Dodgers pitching matchups
Thursday, June 13th – Jon Lester vs Clayton Kershaw
To start off this Cubs vs Dodgers series preview, fans will be treated to dueling lefty aces in game one. The 3-time Cy Young Award Winner, Clayton Kershaw will toe the rubber for Los Angeles Thursday night.
The baseball world was unsure whether or not Kershaw wild regain his dominance entering 2019. But the veteran has shown he’s still capable of pitching at all-star levels. Lester has been the picture of dominance against Dodger 3b, Justin Turner. Turner has collected precisely 0 hits against Lester in 20 career AB. But MVP candidate, Cody Bellinger isn’t phased by this lefty.
Bellinger has raked against Lester in previous matchups. And he will be entering the series leading the league in several offensive categories.
Friday, June 14th – Kyle Hendricks vs Rich Hill
Kyle Hendricks has been the most consistent pitcher for the Cubs this season. He seems to give the Cubs a shot to win every time out. In the month of May, Hendricks picked up 4 wins while amassing an amazing 37 to 5 K to BB ratio.
Last time out against the Cubs, Buehler was dealing early but got into trouble in the 6th. With a couple of runners on, he yielded a homer to Javy Baez and the Cubs went on to win 7-6.
Saturday, June 15th – Yu Darvish vs Walker Buehler
Compared to Walker Buehler’s 2018 season (8-5), he’s looking good at 7-1 this season. In the 1-0 win against the Giants, he ended the game with a 3.35 ERA, so it’s going to be another tough one for the Cubs.
Although the numbers look rough, Yu Darvish has turned in much more competitive outings as of late. Plus he could have the factor of unfamiliarity on his side as most of the Dodgers have not faced Darivsh more than a few times.
Sunday, June 16th – Jose Quintana vs Hyun-Jin Ryu
If the season ended today, Hyun-Jin Ryu may be the Cy Young Winner. Jose Quintana, on the other hand, led the Cubs to a win over Maeda and the Dodgers on April 23rd. Quintana cruised for 7 innings and allowed only 2 runs. With Ryu tossing up scoreless inning after scoreless inning, the dynamic Dodgers are tough to beat.
