5 Best Pitching Matchups In The First Week Of April

    April 2, 2019 | Baseball Sports

The MLB season is now in full swing. Teams are getting into their rhythms and are starting to get a real feel of another competitive baseball campaign. The first week of April should give us a better idea of what to expect from players and teams for the rest of the season.

With all those said, Nitrogen Sports Blog checks out the games during the first week of the month and discusses the five interesting pitching matchups you don’t want to miss.

Blake Snell (Tampa Rays) vs. Kyle Freeland (Colorado Rockies)

When: Tuesday, April 2, 2019 EST

In spite of a lackluster opening day performance, there’s no denying that Snell is one of the best pitchers in the majors today. He is the reigning AL Cy Young award winner after all.

In his regular season debut, though, he allowed five earned runs on six hits in six innings of a 5-1 home loss to the Houston Astros. As for Freeland, the lefty surrendered an earned run on two hits over seven innings and was instrumental in the Rockies’ 6-3 road victory over the Miami Marlins.

Jordan Zimmermann (Detroit Tigers) vs. Masahiro Tanaka (New York Yankees)

When: Tuesday, April 2, 2019 EST

Zimmermann flirted with a perfect game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Day 1, striking out four batters and walking none in seven frames of mound action. He wasn’t able to get the backing of his team’s offense during his stint in that game, but at least got away with a no-decision in a 2-0 win. Tanaka will start in the place of the injured Luis Severino. Last season Tanaka managed a 2.95 ERA in his final 15 starts. The Japanese pitcher had a good Opening Day, giving up an earned run on six hits to get a win against the Baltimore Orioles at home.

Justin Verlander (Houston Astros) vs. Shelby Miller (Texas Rangers)

When: Tuesday, April 2, 2019 EST

Verlander was the runner up for 2018 AL Cy award. He’s in great form and will now face Miller, who signed a two-year deal with the Rangers back in January and will be making his debut in Texas threads this Tuesday. Verlander keeps a 13-8 record and a 2.82 ERA in 25 career starts against the Rangers dating back to 2006. Miller went 0-4 with a 10.69 ERA in five total appearances (four starts) last year for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Stephen Strasburg (Washington Nationals) vs. Noah Syndergaard (New York Mets)

    When: Thursday, April 4, 2019

Syndergaard and Strasburg will face off for the second time in less than a week this coming Wednesday in New York. Syndergaard figured into a no-decision in his first start of the season, as he yielded four earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in an 11-8 win in Washington on Mar. 30. He will look to get his first W of the season when he duels with Strasburg, who also received a no-decision in the same game. Strasburg was tagged with four earned runs and seven hits by the Mets, but managed to punch out seven New York batters.

Aaron Sanchez (Toronto Blue Jays) vs. Corey Kluber (Cleveland Indians)

When: Thursday, April 4, 2019 EST

Sanchez dazzled on his first visit to the mound this season, tossing five scoreless innings and striking out six hitters in a 3-0 win at home over the Detroit Tigers on Mar. 30. His fastball was smoking in that assignment, clocking in at a top speed of 97.1 — way better than the 93.7 he had last year. Kluber, on the other hand, was unfortunate enough to get a loss (2-0 vs. Minnesota Twins) last week despite allowing just two earned runs on four hits in seven innings of duty. Last season he finished third for the AL Cy Young award.

It’s still early in the 2019 MLB season, but there’s already been a tremendous amount of action happening on the fields across the majors. Of course, there’s also plenty of action on the betting side of baseball. Keep visiting Nitrogen Sports Blog for more general sports betting guide and MLB betting tips.
