Betting on the New York Yankees

The Yankees extended the Minnesota Twins’ misery in the postseason with a 3-0 series win in the Americal League Division Series. The Bronx Bombers hit well against the Twins.

In fact, New York owns the best batting average (.293) in the postseason prior to the league championship round. Gleyber Torres went 5 for 12 with a home run and four RBIs, while Didi Gregorius was 4 for 10 with a homer and drove in six runs. Giancarlo Stanton had a forgettable ALDS stint, going .167 at the plate, though, he did have four walks and a .455 OBP.

New York is capable of matching Houston’s bats, but the team’s pitching will be a bigger key to success in the next round. Masahiro Tanaka held the Astros to a total of three earned runs in 12.0 innings across two starts in the regular season. The Yankees’ bullpen is also tough to get through, as it entered the postseason 10th in the league in ERA (4.08).

In a curious tactic, pitcher Adam Ottavino saw little play against the Twins. The Yankees used Ottavino solely against feared hitter Nelson Cruz. Given the results, it’s obvious that the Yankees could afford such a move. It also leaves Ottavino well rested going into the next series. As the series underdog per the 2019 ALCS odds, can the Yankees take down Houston?

    Betting on the Houston Astros

The Astros, who are the 2019 ALCS odds favorites, took a longer time than what most people expected for them to eliminate the gritty Tampa Bay Rays. That said, it was always a tall order to defeat Tampa Bay, which boasted of a crew of talented arms on the mound.

After dealing with the Rays’ elite pitching staff, the Astros will find themselves likely in a more offense-oriented series. When it comes to putting up men on bases and runs on the board, Houston is among the best in the majors. In the regular season, the Astros were third in runs (920), third in home runs (288), and tops in batting average (.274).

The Astros’s pitching rotation isn’t too shabby either. The three-headed monster of Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole, and Zack Greinke can lock down the Yankees’ bats. Verlander and Greinke had letdown performances against the Rays, but their struggles are few and far in between, so expect them to recover. Cole has been pitching his minds out in the postseason, posing a 2-0 record and allowing just an earned run in 15.2 innings against the Rays.
