What to know about the New England Patriots

New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills betting odds for New England: +4

The New England Patriots had another disappointing showing against the pesky Miami Dolphins in Week 18, as their 33-24 loss to the Dolphins meant that they came up short on reclaiming the AFC East crown this season. The Patriots lost three of their last four games to close out the regular season after going on an impressive seven-game winning streak in the middle of their campaign.

Rookie quarterback Mac Jones has cooled off in the past month, throwing five interceptions over New England’s last three defeats. While the young signal-caller out of ‘Bama has been a mixed bag of late, the Patriots can still find solace in their stellar running game, as they have the eighth-best rushing offense in the league (126.5 RYPG) and the sixth-highest scoring offense as well (27.2 PPG).

It wouldn’t be a Bill Belichick-led Patriots team without a shutdown defense, and that certainly is the case this season. The Pats have the fourth-best defense in yards allowed (310.8 PAPG) and are second only behind their opponent this Saturday night in terms of scoring defense (17.8 PAPG). New England has also forced the third-most turnovers in the regular season with 30 takeaways, as this stellar stop unit will try to contain Buffalo’s Josh Allen for the third time this season.

What to know about the Buffalo Bills

New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills betting odds for Buffalo: -4

A favorable matchup in Week 18 against the New York Jets all but meant that the Buffalo Bills were bound to be crowned AFC East champs in back-to-back seasons. The Bills did just that with a 27-10 domination of the Jets to win their fourth consecutive contest to close out the regular season.

Josh Allen bounced back from a three-interception outing in Week 17 by throwing for 239 passing yards and two scores without a pick in the win over New York. Allen finished the regular season with over 4,400 passing yards and 36 touchdowns as one of the league’s most reliable arms. However, it’s been running back Devin Singletary who’s stepped up in the past month. Singletary has three games of 80-plus rushing yards and a total of five rushing TDs over his last four starts.

Buffalo possesses a top-five offense as well as the best defense in the league, allowing a league-low 17.0 points per game to their opponents and is the only team in the NFL to average less than 300 yards allowed per contest (272.8 YAPG). Although the Bills got their revenge against the Patriots in Week 16 with a 12-point victory, they should still be cautious about the Pats’ stout defense that was on full display during their snow-coated defeat in Orchard Park in Week 13 wherein New England won the game despite finishing with just two pass completions on three attempts by Jones.

What’s your New England Patriots vs. Buffalo Bills AFC Wild Card prediction?

Although the Bills are slightly favored to win the blockbuster Wild Card clash, there’s more than enough reason to believe that the Patriots can pull off the upset given Belichick’s glowing postseason pedigree. Both teams have astounding defenses, which means that bets on the over/under may be the way to go if picking the winner of this matchup is too trivial to predict.
