91st Academy Awards: Which Film is Your Best Picture?
Hollywood’s most prestigious award show is at our doorstep. The much-sought after Oscar statuettes will be awarded on February 24th. Alongside the glitz and glamour, the nominee line-up for this year is notably diverse.
91st Academy Awards Best Picture nominees
BlacKKKlansman (+2600) and The Green Book (+400) are both focused on true life stories of African-Americans. And, of course, Black Panther is a pop culture sensation. It shattered many of Hollywood’s misconceptions.
Marvel and their powerhouse cinematic universe snagged many Oscar nominations in previous years. However, a nomination for Best Picture is unheard of. In fact, it isn’t only a first for Marvel – it is the first superhero movie to receive the nomination.
Yet, Black Panther (+2600) faces heavy competition and remains a long shot for the win.
Netflix produced Roma is overcoming the odds to become a serious contender. The latest in a line of Netflix attempts to break into the awards, Roma is also a foreign language film.
These two facts would usually make winning difficult. Despite this, critics are raving about the story of a domestic servant in 1970s Mexico.
The competition may come down to two musical entries. Rami Malek headed Queen Biopic Bohemian Rhapsody enjoyed considerable commercial success. Although critics responded more mutely, the film gained steam in previous awards competitions.
Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury earned universal praise. This gives him a strong chance at winning the Best Actor award.
The second music-focused nominee is A Star is Born (+2600), starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. This is Lady Gaga’s second year in the running for an Oscar. Before, the Academy placed her in the running for Best Original Song for 2015’s “Til It Happens to You.” This marks the first year that she is in contention for a Best Actress slot.
BlacKKKlansman faces an uphill battle to win the Best Picture award. But, director Spike Lee may win Best Director with his first Academy Awards nomination.
An industry veteran, the academy managed to snub Lee in all prior years. Those snubs allowed him to build the momentum that brought him to this point.
The Green Book, at first, looked like a solid choice for the Best Picture award. It seized many previous awards before running afoul of controversy. Critics decried the misaligned focus of the movie. It’s diminishing of a pioneer African-American to a supporting role may cost it the award.
