Nitrogen Sports Blog isn’t just all about sports. From time to time, we’ll be discussing culture (TV, movies, etc.) because there’s really nothing that we can’t bet on, right? That’s why we’re here: to talk about Emmy Awards drama and comedy nominations for the upcoming 71st Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

    Outstanding Drama Series

The 71st Emmy Awards Best Drama Series involves eight nominees led by heavy favorite, Game of Thrones. The HBO-produced fantasy drama is currently priced at -1667 to win the coveted TV recognition. Game of Thrones racked up 161 nominations and 47 wins over its previous seven seasons, and its creators may have to clear more space in their trophy case to accommodate at least another one.

However, Game of Thrones isn’t without some stellar competition. Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul (+2200) has a case to make in pulling off an upset, while Killing Eve is lurking with odds of +500. Also in contention is Netflix’s Ozark, which is a long shot at +4500. Other nominees include Bodyguard (+3700), This Is Us (+3700), Pose (+4500), and Succession (+7600).

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh (-303) owns the shortest odds to win the Best Actress In A Drama Series Award for her lead role in the BBC America show. Jodie Cromer, Oh’s co-star in the same show, is right behind with odds of +350. Robin Wright of House of Cards may need some politicking to get her the top seat in this race, as she is just +3300 to win.

Meanwhile, Emilia Clarke (+550) is also in contention for the Iron Throne of of drama series acting by an actress. Laura Linney (+2200) of Ozark also earned a nomination at the 71st Emmy Awards. BBC spy thriller Killing Eve snagged two nominations, for Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Game of Thrones is represented in this category at the 71st Emmy Awards by Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow in the hit series that recently just concluded. Harington, though, isn’t the favorite to win the award for the best lead actor in a drama series, as he only is labelled with +1500 odds.

The top favorite is Jason Bateman of Ozark. Bateman, who plays Marty Byrde, the under-pressure financial advisor who is tasked to launder money, is +120 to pocket the award. Billy Porter (+125) of Pray Tell and Bob Odenkirk (+333) of Better Call Saul rounds out the top three favorites.

Milo Ventimiglia of Jack Pearson and Sterling K. Brown of This is Us are the long shots with prices of +2600 and +4100, respectively.

    Outstanding Comedy Series

At 15 Emmy wins, Veep (+120) stands out among the nominated comedy series. This political comedy series completed its final season this past May. Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep earned consistent nominations throughout its run. But Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (+1200) took home the Emmy last year and could do so again.

Barry (+300), an HBO comedy starring Bill Hader, earned a second consecutive nomination for the category. The remaining four nominees, Fleabag (+600), Russian Doll (+3300), The Good Place (+3300), and Schitt’s Creek (+4000) are competing for the first time.
