NFL Game Previews

We’re down to the last week of the 2019 NFL regular season, but even with the playoffs just around the corner, the cast of teams playing beyond Week 17 is yet to be completed. All the questions will be answered this coming Sunday, though, with 16 games packed into one day of football extravaganza. Nitrogen Sports Blog previews eight selected games below.

Los Angeles Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
    Where: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts
NFL Odds: Chargers (+8) vs. Patriots (-8)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter: 2/5

What to know about the Chargers (5-10)

Nothing went well for the Chargers in week 16 against the Raiders. The offense was stagnant and nearly finished the first quarter without a first down. It was representative of their disappointing season. They’ll be heading into a transition in the offseason with not much to play for in the season’s final week. But they could be inspired by the possibility of Philip Rivers playing the final game of his career.

What to know about the Chiefs (11-4)

Pat Mahomes is looking better each week, and he has the Chiefs rolling at the right time. While the offense gets all the praise, The Chiefs defense has been outstanding as well. Since their bye week, the Chiefs have only given up 9.6 points per game.

    Betting trends:

    • The Chargers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
    • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of the Chiefs last 6 games.

Tennessee Titans vs. Houston Texans Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
    Where: NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas
NFL Odds: Titans (-3.5) vs. Texans (+3.5)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter: 4/5

What to know about the Titans (8-7)

With the Steelers losing to the Jets, the Titans missed an opportunity to get themselves into a playoff position. Pro Bowl running back Derrick Henry missed the Titans Week 16 match against the Saints. But he should be back for a shot at the playoffs in the final week of the season.

What to know about the Texans (10-5)

After a long overtime battle, the Texans came away with a win against the Bengals and clinched the AFC South division title. The roller coaster game may have taken a lot out of the Bengals, but they have a shot to get a first round bye with a win and some help.

    Betting trends:

    • The Titans are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
    • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of The Texans’ last 9 games.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
Where: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey
NFL Odds: Eagles (-4.5) vs. Giants (+4.5)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter: 4/5

What to know about the Eagles (8-7)

Zach Ertz suffered a rib injury early in last week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys but was able to tough it out and return to the game. While he was out, Carson Wentz stepped up. Wentz delivered a pass to Dallas Goedert who made an acrobatic touchdown catch for the Eagles. The Eagles are trending in the right direction and have a shot to clinch the NFC East title — and a playoff spot — next week.

What to know about the Giants (4-11)

With a losing season winding down, the Giants were at least able to get some positive contributions from their quarterback of the future. Daniel Jones became the first rookie with at least 350 yards, 5 touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 16. Jones and the Giants will try to build on that performance in their final game.

    Betting trends:

    • The Eagles are 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games.
    • The total has gone OVER in 6 of the Giants’ last 8 games.

Oakland Raiders vs. Denver Broncos Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
Where: Empower Field at Mile High, Denver, Colorado
NFL Odds: Raiders (+3.5) vs. Broncos (-3.5)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter: 2/5

What to know about the Raiders (7-8)

Oakland kept its playoff hopes alive in Week 16 when they beat the Chargers. Hunter Renfrow finished the game with 107 receiving yards and a touchdown. He’s been building chemistry with Derek Carr and could emerge as a star. They’ll need some help but could make the playoffs with an even 8-8 record. If they could pull it off, they could be dangerous.

What to know about the Broncos (6-9)

The Broncos will finish up the season with a losing record. But are able to walk away with some positives. After beating the Lions with great top to bottom performance, Broncos fans are thinking a contender is on the horizon. Drew Lock has looked like the quarterback of the future for the Broncos and there is hope they can build a winner.

    Betting trends:

    • The Raiders are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
    • The Broncos are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
    Where: CenturyLink Field, Seattle, Washington
    NFL Odds: 49ers (-3) vs. Seahawks (+3)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter:5/5

What to know about the 49ers (12-3)

Deebo Samuel broke the legendary Jerry Rice’s record of 49 receptions by a rookie. He now has 52 catches so far this year and could build on his record in the season finale.

What to know about the Seahawks (11-4)

The Seahawks suffered more than just a loss in Week 16, as they also lost some important offensive weapons. It was announced that RB CJ Prosise would miss the remainder of the year with a broken arm and a hip injury would end the season of fellow RB Chris Carson.

    Betting trends:

    • The 49ers are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 10 games against division opponents.
    • The Seahawks are 4-2-1 ATSin their last 7 games.

Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Rams Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
Where: LA Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California
NFL Odds: Cardinals (TBA) vs. Rams (TBA)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter: 3/5

What to know about the Cardinals (5-9-1)

Cardinals beat the Seahawks. Kenyan Drake has looked great since they’ve acquired him. He gave the Cards a huge boost with an 80-yard TD against Seattle. But there is also reason to be a little concerned. After a couple good weeks moving the ball, Kyler Murray is a little beat up. He might miss the final week of the season with a leg injury.

What to know about the Rams (8-7)

Sean McVay says he’s not happy with not making the playoffs. He’s vowed to be better and is ready to make some changes in the Rams’ coaching staff. The team could be motivated to pick up a win in the season’s final game in the wake of McVay’s words.

    Betting trends:

    • The Cardinals are 5-1-1 ATS on the road this season.
    • The Rams are 10-5 ATS in 2019.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
Where: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Maryland
NFL Odds: Ravens (-2.5) vs. Browns (+2.5)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter: 5/5

What to know about the Steelers (8-7)

A slew of injuries and sloppy play contributed to the Steelers loss in Week 16 against the Jets. Running back James Conner and center Maurkice Pouncey left the game with injuries. Devlin Hodges was benched, but had to come back in the game when Mason Rudolph went down with a shoulder injury. With the loss, they missed an opportunity to jump into a playoff spot. They’ll need to win the last game of the year for a shot at the postseason.

What to know about the Ravens (13-2)

Lamar Jackson probably clinched the MVP while the Ravens clinched the top seed in the AFC. Jackson lit it up with 3 TDs and 103 rushing yards in the 31-15 victory over the Browns. Mark Ingram suffered a calf injury, the severity is unknown but it would make sense to rest the running back with nothing on the line in the final week.

    Betting trends:

    • The total has gone under in the Steelers last 6 games.
    • The Ravens are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games.

New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthers Week 17 Game Preview

    When: Sunday, December 29, 2019
Where: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina
NFL Odds: Saints (-13) vs. Panthers (+13)
NFL Game preview 2019 watchability meter: 3/5

What to know about the Saints (12-3)

Michael Thomas and Drew Brees both have had record setting years. Thomas now has the most receptions in a season and Brees has the most touchdown passes of all time. The division is locked up for New Orleans, but the Saints still have a reason to go all out in their last game. They can still clinch the top seed in the Conference with a win and some help from other teams.

What to know about the Panthers (5-10)

After the Panthers’ most recent loss, tight end Greg Olsen called the team an embarrassment and the organization a failure. It’s obvious to see things aren’t going well in Carolina. The Panthers are now on a seven-game losing streak and are looking lifeless to close out the season.

    Betting trends:

    • The Saints are 10-3 ATSin their last 13 games.
    • The Panthers are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games.
