Craps Table Rules

First off, let’s learn more about the different terminologies and rules of craps.

Terms you need to know:
Shooter – the person who throws the dice in a given betting round.

Come-out roll – the first dice roll of a betting round.
Rolls of the dice have three different outcomes in craps:
Natural – the result of a dice roll is either a 7 or an 11. If the outcome is a “natural” roll, the shooter who rolled the dice wins the betting round and gets to roll again.

Craps – the result of a dice roll is either a 2, or a 3, or a 12. Rolling a 2 is also commonly known as “snake eyes”. If the outcome is a “craps” roll, the shooter who rolled the dice loses the betting round, but also gets to roll again.

Point – the result of a dice roll is either a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. In online craps casino games, getting a “point” roll from any one of the numbers stated here will give an indication marker saying that the player must roll again and try to get the same number in succeeding dice roll attempts. The shooter wins if he/she gets exactly the same sum as the first roll, regardless of the combination of the dice.

Rolling any other “point” roll in second attempts will have the shooter continue rolling the dice until he/she hits either a “Natural” roll or a “craps” roll to determine the shooter’s winning or losing result. But, if the shooter rolls a 7, that player loses and ends the betting round. This is when you “seven out” in the game and turn over the next betting round to the next shooter.

Craps Table Layout

Next, let’s take a look at what an online craps casino table looks like below at Nitrogen Casino.

craps Table Shot

Make sure that you get a good grasp of the language and rules of the game in order to better understand the different betting options laid out on the craps table.

The simplest bet to make is either on the “Pass Line” or the “Don’t Pass Line” (seen as “Don’t Pass Bar”) options on the table.

The Pass Line means that you place a bet on the shooter winning via either a natural roll or by winning the point before seven-ing out.

The Don’t Pass Line/Bar means that you place a bet on the shooter losing by either rolling a 2, or a 3, or fails to hit the point roll number again before the shooter sevens out.

If the shooter rolls a 12, your bet is considered a “push”, which means you don’t win nor lose the current bet.

Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line/Bar bets can only be placed only before the point has been determined on the craps table.

The “Come” or “Don’t Come” options on the table can only be bet on after the point roll has been determined.

The Come Bet wins if the shooter hits a natural roll and loses if the shooter hits a craps roll. If the shooter hits the same sum as the point, the bet wins and it becomes the Come-Bet point. If the Come-Bet wins every time the Come-Bet point is hit, and loses the bet once the shooter hits a 7.

The Don’t Come Bet wins if the shooter hits a 2 or a 3 on a roll, but loses when the shooter hits a 7 or 11. If the shooter rolls a 12, the bet is also considered a push.

These two bets cannot be turned off and must be played out until the end of the betting round. Bets on the Come-Bet point can be increased or withheld at any time before the shooter attempts his/her next point roll.

Craps Prop Bets

You’ll notice on the right-hand side of the craps table that there are other betting options.

Side Craps

These are bets that you can place on any one-roll turn, and these options are highlighted on the craps table screen once they are eligible to be bet on during the current betting round:
Bet Wins If
Payout Ratio
Aces/Snake Eyes
The shooter rolls a 2
The shooter rolls a 12
Ace Deuce
The shooter rolls a 3
Yo Eleven
The shooter rolls an 11
Hi Lo
The shooter rolls a 2 or a 12
Any Craps
The shooter rolls a 2, 3, or a 12
Any Seven
The shooter rolls a 7
The shooter rolls a 2, 3, 11 or a 12
27:4 (2 or 12);
3:1 (3 or 11)

There are also betting options known as the “Hard Ways”. You win these bets if the shooter rolls a 4, 6, 8 or 10, with the exact pair of the combination of dice rolled (ex: a bet on 3 and 3 for a 6-roll outcome, a bet on 4 and 4 for an 8-roll outcome, etc.) before any other combination of dice outcome that makes a sum of a roll or if the shooter rolls a 7/sevens out.

Similar to the other prop bets mentioned above, Hard Ways bets have different payout values depending on the roll’s outcome:

Hard Ways Bet Wins If
Payout Ratio
The shooter rolls a 4
The shooter rolls a 6
The shooter rolls an 8
The shooter rolls a 10

Other Bets with A 1:1 Payout

There are also a few more betting options that can be placed, albeit with a smaller winning payout:

Place Bet – Once the point has been determined, you can place a bet on any number on the table. You win the bet if that number is hit before a 7 is rolled, and you lose the bet if your number wasn’t hit.

Field Bet – A Field Bet can only be placed for one dice roll. You win this bet if a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 is rolled, and lose if a 5, 6, 7, or 8 is rolled.

The Big 6 and Big 8 Bets – You can place bets on either hitting a 6 or 8 in a roll before a 7 is rolled with these two betting options.

Nitro Bets

Last but not least, the fire or flame icon on the craps table is made for Nitro Bets – high-risk, high reward bets similar to Fire Bets™ found in other casino tables. Nitro Bets can only be placed during the come-out roll for a new shooter, and the bet is based on their point streak before they roll a 7.

Here’s how Nitro Bets pay out once the shooter goes on a point-rolling streak before they seven out:

Nitro Bet Point-Roll Total
Payout Ratio
3 or fewer points
Bet loses
4 points
5 points
6 points

Best Craps Strategy for Beginners

It may still seem rather daunting on your first try at craps, so start out with the basic bets such as the Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line options. Then, get a feel of how the betting rounds play out first and take note of the other betting activities taking place on the table from the other players.

Once you’re much more familiar with the flow of the game, that’s when you start to crank up the action by knowing more about the odds of each dice roll and the probabilities of winning the other betting options on the table with higher payouts. Check out the official Nitro Casino Craps page for the complete breakdown of betting options and their corresponding payout values as a reference in order to understand the game to its fullest capacity.

It doesn’t need to be mentioned that placing small bets to start is always the wisest option. You certainly don’t want to blow your entire bankroll on a few big turns despite how much you believe the odds being in your favor.
